And you know that the packing is good (and that the upper and lower ball is not stuck) then replace the inlet assembly.
The basic way to tell is if the pump is priming, but will not build up full pressure. So it is sometimes hard to tell when to replace the inlet assembly. A worn inlet will give you similar symptoms as a worn packing.
2: A inlet will eventually wear out and need replacing. 
If it is lost this means the user took the assembly apart and lost the ball.) (Common part to loose is the ball, which the ball CAN NOT come out on its own.
1: If you lost any parts inside the assembly you must replace the assembly. How do you know when to replace this part? So if you did take the inlet assembly apart for cleaning (which is highly not advised), be very careful to not loose any parts or you will have to purchase the whole assembly. NO individual parts are available for any of the inlet assemblies. (Refer to the owner's manual for further instructions located on page 20 of the latest DSP/Apex owner's manual.) However please avoid taking the inlet apart for cleaning. If needed, you can remove the inlet assembly from the sprayer for further cleaning/inspecting. Note: The 9140/1420 models are not affected, you can use either the 0512215 or the 0516219 suction set with either the pusher inlet or the non pusher inlet. So if you are thinking about upgrading an older (non pusher) DSP/Apex sprayer (that has wheels) to the new style inlet you MUST purchase a new 0516278 Metal-Flex suction set as it is about พ" inch shorter. The New/Pusher Inlet is approximately พ" inch longer than the Old Style-Non Pusher Inlets.
Cart models (wheeled), MUST use Metal-Flex suction set with New/Pusher Style Inlet. Meaning the Old Style-Non Pusher sprayers will accept the New/Pusher Inlets and the New/Pusher Sprayers will accept the Old Style-Non Pusher Inlets. This 0516292 New/Pusher style inlet is backwards compatible with 051222 Old Style-Non Pusher. The New/Pusher and Non Pusher Inlets are interchangeable. The mapping is set in the Bank 2 of the Midi Fighter 64, the three top rows of buttons are assigned to the controls of the pattern recorder left four columns are for deck C, and right four columns are for deck D, while the following 5 rows are assigned to the classic way of using the step sequencer that was explained in a previous. This inlet feature a "Pusher Stem" that allows a user to push/tap the lower ball without having to remove the suction set. This is the New/Pusher style inlet valve assembly that is included with DSP/Apex pumps listed in the above chart with build dates in late 20 onward.
